Project Overview

A 107 foot crane that picks up submarines for the Navy. It needed to be prepared and coated to very unique specifications.

Challenges

The crane was covered in mill scale (which is formed in the process of making steel). In order to avoid coating failures that scale needed to be removed. However, the crane was too big and too costly to move to another facility. The crane would also eventually be put into a saltwater environment, so Endurance needed to find a solution that met the customized specifications for that particular Naval application, and provided an enduring coat to project that asset for years to come.

Solutions

Because Endurance is able to do mobile blasting, the client was able to keep the crane in their own facility instead of having to incur the cost of moving it. The first part of the process included vapor blasting to thoroughly remove the mill scale. Once the steel had a blast profile, it was sprayed with a special Zinc Carboline product to meet Navy specifications. Next, Carboguard was sprayed as an intermediate coat, which was followed by a topcoat of Carboline 135.
