Project Overview

Endurance was contracted to coat 20 full and some partial tanks in a large tank farm. The majority of the tanks measured 72 ft tall and 15 ft in diameter. A few of them measured 60 ft. tall and required extensive surface prep and coating to ensure protection.

Challenges

The size and condition of the tanks created a combination of problems that needed to be overcome. The condensation that accumulated daily not only presented a challenge, but also demonstrated that the tanks would require a marine coating system rather than a basic industrial oil based alkalide. The base of many of the tanks (both inside and outside) required full blasting before coating.

Solutions

The tops and majority of the sides were water blasted. The bottom two feet (both inside and outside) were completely blasted to prepare for an epoxy mastic coat. That provided a layer of protection between elements and the substrate. An entire coat of rustbond was sprayed which seeped into all cracks and crevices and held down the existing coating. The intermediate coat included a layer of Carboguard 645 which received a final coat of high gloss Carbothane 134. In the end, the three coat system combined to total 20 mils of coating which will protect the tanks for years to come.
